This week all three Battalions took on their first public service project. The Chesapeake Fire Department is raising money for a disabled young man who is a huge fire buff. The Department is raising money to help his family remodel his bathroom with a Fire Department theme. The goal for the entire Department was to raise $1800 to offset the cost. Well the Fighting 40 step forward and raised $800 by passing the hat. For their first public service project this class did an excellent job. They have shown that they have the compassion and generosity to be a member of the Chesapeake Fire Department. Battalion 1 Battalion 1 is still working hard on perfecting their med-math skills. Most of this week was spent on doing practical skills and getting them ready for their upcoming ride time. Several skills that were worked on included performing patient assessments, establishing airways, and starting I.V.s. Battalion 2 Battalion 2 began their last week of classroom of EMT-B with a heavy concentration on patient assessments, and managing medical and trauma situations. Chief Fermil gave his inspirational and riveting class on HIPPA compliance. Battalion 2 also learned how EMS providers respond to a terrorism incident. The week ended with Battalion 2 taking their final exam for EMT-B. We are pleased to announce that the class average was 93. This proves that all the late nights of studying paid off with everyone passing the final. Good job Battalion 2! Battalion On Monday Battalion 3 spent the day doing fire skills and completing the combat challenge. The Combat Challenge is a timed course that includes carrying hose up and down stairs, dragging a 100’ section of charged 1 ¾” hose, hitting a target with an effective water stream, and dragging a 160 lb dummy. During the week, Battalion 3 also had instruction in sprinkler systems, building construction and ground ladders. The class had their second of four major tests, and all members passed with a class average of 87.
