This week all Battalions had major tests in their respective subject matter. Failure of any of these tests could cause a recruit to be released from the Academy. The class has worked hard at getting better in their P.T. performance. This week Training Director Captain Gulisano participated in P.T. with the recruits, and he was impressed with the 8 minute mile pace the recruits were running.
Battalion 1 members were having flashbacks of their high school days this week! Battalion 1 recruits reviewed basic high school math in preparation for learning “Med Math”. A significant part of EMT-E is learning how to accurately do Med Math. Med Math is a skill that requires recruits to figure out what amount of a drug they would administer to a patient. This part is so critical that each student must score a 95% or better on their Med Math test. This week Battalion 1 also spent a lot of time doing practical evolutions on patient assessment, airway management, and starting I.V. Battalion 2 worked a lot this week on taking care of trauma patients. They learned about soft tissue injuries, bleeding and shook, and injuries to the head and spine. Their practical training included patient assessment, bandaging, splinting, and immobilizing patients. Battalion 3 finally got to see some fire in their training. On Tuesday the Battalion learned all the ins and outs of using a portable fire extinguisher. This training also included putting out a live fire; their first of many to come! The rest of the week the recruits learned about how firefighters move and handle water in the fire service. This included instruction and practical exercises on water supply systems, fire hoses, and fire streams. Battalion 3 spent two days outside doing practical training; on two of the hottest days we have had this summer.
