Review of Week 3 of Recruit Class “The Fighting 40”
This was a short week at the Academy because of the July 4th holiday. The entire class is performing much better at P.T. each day. After running 5 days a week for 7 month straight, who knows how far they will be able run! Running greatly improves cardiovascular fitness which is an attribute that is needed to perform effectively on the fireground. Battalion 1 This week Battalion 1 had a review of EMT-B (Basic) in preparation of beginning EMT-E (Enhanced). Recruits reviewed basic skills from the EMT-B curriculum including medical emergencies, child birth, trauma care, and legal issues. Friday the class took a 200 question test and went through practical skills stations that included trauma assessment and medical emergencies. Battalion 2 Battalion 2 continued their EMT-B training by covering subjects that included assessment of trauma patients, communications with the patient and the hospital, general pharmacology and respiratory emergencies. On Thursday the class took their second weekly test and the grades for the test were excellent. Battalion 3 Battalion 3 began the week learning about the history of the fire service and the Chesapeake Fire Department. They also received classes in communication, fire behavior, firefighter safety, and personnel protective equipment. Friday afternoon the recruits were intimately introduced to their turnout gear. They spent the afternoon practicing donning and doffing their personnel protective equipment in less than 90 seconds. Before the end of the Academy they will be able to perform this skill in less than 60 seconds.
