Review of Week Two of Fire Recruit Class 40
Battalion 1
Battalion 1 began the week as basic recruits, but they ended the week earning their first certification in Hazardous Materials. They learned how to identify chemicals, how they can react in certain situations, and how to protect themselves when they come into contact with these chemicals. Battalion 1 learned that “gross decon” also means being soaked to the skin!
Battalion 2
Battalion 2 began their Emergency Medical Technician training. Battalion 2 covered subjects from Medical Legal and Ethical Issues, to the Human Body and Airway Management. They had their first big weekly test, and all students were very nervous because of the high academic standards established at the academy.
Battalion 3
This week began, with the cones at the driving course being very scared and unsure if they would see the weeks end! Emergency Vehicle Operator’s Course was on the schedule for Battalion 3. This is where the recruits learn to maneuver large emergency vehicles through a very tight cone course. They began the week with 1 ˝ days of classroom and the rest of the week the recruits were behind the wheel of fire engines and medic units. Many of the cones sustained significant damage, but we are pleased to report that all will make a full recovery.
This was also the first full week of physical fitness training (PT). PT is conducted every morning at 0700 and had many of the recruits moving a bit slow by weeks end. The City will not be charging family members for the improved shape these recruit will be in at the end of the academy!
