During the first week of the Academy recruits are full of excitement, nervousness, and enthusiasm. On Monday all recruits attend the City’s Orientation where they learn about the City of Chesapeake, the benefits they can enjoy, the responsibilities and expectations that they now have as City employees, and the general guiding philosophies of the City. On Tuesday recruits attend the Fire Department orientation. During this day, recruits meet the Fire Chief, the Command Staff, and Training Staff. Expectations of what the recruits can expect over the 7 month Academy are clearly defined to them. At the end of the day recruits are broken down into three Battalions that they will be assigned to for the remainder of the Academy. Battalion 1 will start the EMT-E curriculum, Battalion 2 will start the EMT-B curriculum, and Battalion 3 will start the fire curriculum.
On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of the first week, recruits are constantly on the move. During this time frame they are all issued their uniforms, participate in Team Building exercises, and complete a CPR class. They are also issued their turnout gear and Battalion 3 attends a First Aid class. |
